Every search starts somewhere. Mine started with a sentence a woman said to me in a wine bar, about another woman nobody could name. Before is the record of what that sentence led to. It is the first book of The Husband Experiment, it is based on a true story, and you can read it free.

What Before is about

For eleven years I have written about people who didn't want to be written about. I had never had a source like this one.

A woman whose name nobody could agree on. A method nobody could explain. A story that had been passed around for ten years in a hundred versions, no two the same. The women who told it were not the kind who invent things.

Before covers the search: the tip, the women who would talk, and the point at which every one of them stopped. It ends with the house she grew up in, and the one week she has never told anyone about.

She agreed to give me the before. Everything else had to be earned.

Who Before is for

Before is for readers who like true stories that read like novels, and who are curious about the questions underneath them: what women want from men, what they are willing to say out loud, and what they keep to themselves. It is written for adults, 18 and over.

Why the series starts with the before

When she finally agreed to talk to me, she set one condition. I could write about where she came from, the years before anything happened, and nothing else until I had earned it. At the time it felt like a refusal. It turned out to be the shape of the whole series.

That is why the first book is about origins. You can't understand what a woman chooses until you know what she was choosing between. The house she grew up in, the people who shaped what she expected, the week she never talks about: all of it sits under every decision in the books that follow.

It is also why Before is the right place for a new reader to start. It asks for fifteen minutes, and by the end you'll know whether you want to follow the trail.

What comes next
