Five Rules: Book Three of The Husband Experiment
She gave the rules across three long evenings, in a room I can't describe, in a city I can't name. She gave them in a specific order, and she said the order was part of the meaning. Five Rules is the record of those evenings, the third book of The Husband Experiment. It is based on a true story and free to read.
What Five Rules is about
The first four rules sound simple when you list them. The life you don't cancel. The question you don't ask. The story you don't tell. The door you leave open.
The fifth is the one she wasn't sure she should give at all.
Four of them will change a life. The fifth is the reason hers worked. The book is only the visible half of her method, and the woman who gave me these rules has not been seen in over a year.
How to read Five Rules
Five Rules is the third record, and it reads best after Before and The Trail. The rules mean more once you know what it took to hear them. The order is set out in The Husband Experiment: The Series and Reading Order.
It is 25 pages, about 2,600 words, a fifteen-minute read, for adults 18 and over. Download it free on noravellick.com, or read it free on Amazon Kindle.
Why the order of the rules matters
She was precise about sequence. Each rule depends on the one before it, she said, and a person who skips ahead will apply the right rule at the wrong time. I kept them in her order in the book, and I'd ask readers to read them that way too: slowly, one at a time.
The first rule is about protecting your own life. The last is about something much harder to name, and it is the reason she hesitated to give it to me at all.
Readers often ask me which rule matters most. I don't think that is the right question. She gave them as a set, and the set is the method. Taking one rule on its own is a little like reading one chapter of a book and assuming you know the ending.
The rules and the research
People sometimes ask whether the rules are advice. They are hers, and they worked in her life. Several of them touch questions I have spent years on in The Record: what attention does to desire, which I wrote about in Attention Is the Technique, and what happens to attraction when one partner carries everything, in The Attraction Killer.
If you've read all three books and want to see what kind of woman you become when you want someone, take the quiz. My other books are on the books page.
